"We managed to find a solution. Several details remain to be worked out, but a solution has been found, and I think that Google's project will be carried out. The solution is to use EU directives as the basis, understanding that we operate in the common EU area and that personal data protection requirements are common," he told reporters in Vilnius on Thursday after meeting with Street View Program Manager Ulf Spitzer.
"Obviously, we would like to bring Street View to Lithuania. I think we still need to look into the details of that, but I can say that it looks very promising. When we hear about the solution, we will announce the date. Technically, we are prepared to start driving. We are driving in Latvia and Estonia at the moment, so we would be reasonably quick," Spitzer told reporters.
The Lithuanian State Data Protection Inspectorate has advised Google to establish a representative office in Lithuania for its Street View project.
The official said that setting up a local representative office would be "problematic" for Google.
Spitzer said that, technically, they could start taking images in Lithuania as early as this summer.
