Lithuania marks day of 1948 Stalinist deportations

On Tuesday, Lithuania is holding events to commemorate deportations of 22 May 1948.

On 22-27 May 1948, Soviet occupants started the largest-scale deportations in Lithuania's history and deported over 40,000 people, including children. / Lietuvos genocido aukų muziejaus nuotr.

Commemorative events were launched with a church service at Vilnius Cathedral in the morning. Later in the day, a commemorative event is planned at the monument for Soviet occupation victims in Apkasu Street.

Representatives of the Union of Lithuanian Political Prisoners and Deportees say that despite the fact that deportations started on 14 June 1941, the peak of the Soviet genocide was recorded in May 1948.

On 22-27 May 1948, Soviet occupants started the largest-scale deportations in Lithuania's history and deported over 40,000 people.

Deportations continue through 1949 and 1952.
