Lithuania rates above Latvia and Poland in Freedom of Press index, but below Estonia

The press freedom situation in Lithuania has barely changed in the last year. Lithuania fares better than most of the neighboring states, but still lags behind Estonia and the Nordic countries, a new international survey has revealed.

The results of Freedom House's Freedom of the Press 2013 index show that Lithuania shares 40-44 positions with the Dominican Republic, Japan, Slovenia, and the Republic of Suriname. Last year, Lithuania was rated number 40-42.

Latvia and Poland are in 55-60 and 47-51 positions respectively this year, while Estonia is rated 13-18 with five other countries.

Russia came in 176th, and Belarus was 193rd. The press in the neighboring countries is not free, according to Freedom House.

Norway, Sweden, Belgium, Finland, and the Netherlands scored highly, and Belarus, Eritrea, Uzbekistan, North Korea, and Turkmenistan were the worst performers.

63 countries have free press, 70 have partly free press, and 64 have press which is not free.
