Lithuanian Energy Minister urges not to worry about lowering water levels in Nemunas due to Belorussian power plant

Lithuania's Energy Minister Arvydas Sekmokas says he sees no reasons to worry about the low water levels in the country's largest River Nemunas, although some experts suspect the water could be running low due to the water-power plant under construction in Belarus.

Sekmokas, substituting for the prime minister on vacation, said the construction should not have a major effect upon the water levels, adding that the government would observe the situation.

"I do not think we should seriously sound alarms, as we see that the Kaunas hydro-electric power plant, once it is constructed, will not have major influence upon the lower Nemunas. I think the construction of the Grodno hydro-electric power plant will have no major influence in the end," the minister told Žinių Radijas news radio on Thursday.

"We will keep an eye on the situation and do everything possible to ensure a normal water level in the Nemunas, as far as we can," Sekmokas said.

He acknowledged that cooperation with Belarus on the matter would yield no result.

Gintautas Labanauskas, director general of the State Water Path Directorate, a few days ago announced his plans to appeal to the government, calling for an answer whether the Nemunas subsided due to the construction of the Grodno power plant.

In his words, the water levels at Kaunas is 7 cm lower than the summer average of the past decade, and the levels at Birštonas is 30 cm below the average of the past decade.
