Lithuanian military intelligence analyst detained for molesting a 14-year-old

A Lithuanian court has sanctioned arrest of a military intelligence analyst D.J., 37, suspected of molesting a 14-year-old boy. The officer has worked at the Second Investigation Department under the Ministry of National Defense for 10 years.

Director of the Second Investigation Department, Colonel Juozas Kačergius, told BNS on Thursday the detained officer had never been disciplined and has even received incentives.

Asked whether internal control officers at the Second Investigation Department had not identified any criminal activities of D.J., Kačergius said that an internal investigation, launched on 8 May, should provide the answer.

"We are carrying out an internal investigation and are trying to put everything together to find out if there has been something that could have indicated potential criminal activities or something similar," Kačergius said.

He added that the suspect was detained late on Monday.

On 8 May, the Second Investigation Department under the Ministry of National Defense launched an internal investigation after prosecutors of Kaunas Regional Prosecutor's Office charged the officer D.J. with having sexual relations with a minor by violating his freedom of sexual consent and inviolability.

"The Second Investigation Department is cooperating with law enforcement in investigating this incident. The officer who was charged is suspended. An internal investigation into alleged degrading of the statutory officer's name was launched," director of the Second Investigation Department, Colonel Juozas Kačergius said in a statement on Wednesday.

He told BNS, the charged person is a statutory officer of the national defense system, but not a military officer.

This is not the first time when an officer of Lithuania's national defense system is suspected of sexual crimes. In early March, a Vilnius court sentenced former Colonel Lieutenant of the General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania, Saulius Vitkus, for 18 years in prison for pedophilia.
