"Strong personalities always charm others with their strength and ability to take responsibility for their nations and various reforms during difficult historic periods," the president told journalists.

In Grybauskaitė's words, Thatcher "truly spoke in support of independence of the Baltic states" and "was always on our side during the Cold War."

"To us, the leader was a symbol of our struggle for independence. Hard, strong, having an opinion and knowing how to stand up for it," the president said after a visit to the embassy.

Grybauskaitė also noted that Thatcher "had enormous historic influence for the future of Great Britain by virtually creating the current economic model for the country."

Thatcher passed away on Monday after suffering a stroke, at the age of 87.
