Lithuanian women outnumber men by quarter-million

1.7 million women lived in Lithuania at the beginning of this year, 255,000 more then men, and women made up 54 percent of the population. There were 117 women for each 100 men, the Statistics Lithuanian announced on Monday.

According to preliminary data, there were 95 women for 100 men under 30 at the beginning of last year, and 180 women for 100 men of 60 and over.

On average, Lithuanian women live 11 years longer then men. In 2010, the average life expectancy among women was 78.8, as compared to 77.4 in 2000.

The data also showed that an increasing number of women decide to postpone getting married and have children. In 2010, the average age of women getting married for the first time was 26.4, down by almost 3 years as compared to 2000.

In 2011, one in eight women was a divorcée, and every seventh was a widow. There were 1.6 times more divorced women than men and 6.6 times more widows than widowers. And one in four women has never been married.

The average age of women giving birth to the first child was 26.6 in 2010, up from 23.9 in 2000. Women gave birth to 1.55 children in 2010, as compared to 1.39 in 2000. Every third child was born out of wedlock.
