Lithuanians pick president Dalia Grybauskaitė as person of the year for 4th time

Lithuanian people have for the 4th consecutive time chosen President Dalia Grybauskaitė as the country's person of the year and the mid-October general elections as the event of the year, according to a survey published in the Lietuvos Rytas daily.

According to the poll carried out by market and public opinion research company Baltijos Tyrimai (Baltic Surveys), 20.2 percent of respondents picked Grybauskaitė to as the Lithuanian person of the year.

The Labor Party's leader Viktor Uspaskich ranked second with 10.1 percent of the vote, followed by Olympic gold medalist in swimming Rūta Meilutytė (9.6 pct).

Further down the list is former president Valdas Adamkus (5.3 pct) and leader of the Social Democratic Party Algirdas Butkevičius who recently took office as Lithuania's new prime minister (4.9 pct).

Some 78.2 percent of respondents said the mid-October parliamentary elections were the event of the year, while 16.9 percent referred to the continuation of the so-called paedophilia scandal.

Another 15.6 percent of those polled said the event of 2012 lied in the successful Lithuanian performance at the London Olympics, 14 percent said it was the referendum on the nuclear power plant. 9.3 percent said Meilutytė's gold medal was the most outstanding event of the past year.

All in all, Lithuanian people listed 74 people as candidates for the person of the year title, including 25 politicians and 25 show business figures, journalists, actors, directors, and artists, 15 athletes and coaches. Some 70 events were mentioned as well.

The survey was carried out on 20-30 November.
