New Lithuanian military intelligence chief appointed

Lieutenant Colonel Alvydas Šiuparis has been appointed to head the Second Investigation Department under the Lithuanian Defense Ministry as of August.

Under an order issued by Defense Minister Rasa Juknevičienė, Šiuparis will replace the incumbent director Juozas Kačergius who will serve as defense attache to the United States and Canada, the minister's adviser Ugne Naujokaitytė has confirmed to BNS.

Šiuparis has been working as deputy director of the department since 25 April.

Šiuparis has been serving in Lithuania's Armed Forces since 1991. In 2008, he was appointed to head the Artillery Battalion of General Giedraitis, headed the Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) in the Afghan province of Ghor in May-November 2009 and was the staff commander of the Motorized Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf until 25 April 2012.

The Second Investigation Department performs intelligence and counterintelligence in defense, military-political, military-economic and military-technical fields.
