Number of HIV cases went up in Lithuania

The number of HIV cases went up in Lithuania last year, while the number of other cases of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) decreased, figures from the Centre of Communicable Diseases and AIDS have shown.

There were 166 HIV cases recorded in 2011, up from 153 in 2010. The number of gonorrhea cases decreased to 248 from 315. 343 people contracted Chlamydia (down from 367 in 2010) and 273 people contracted syphilis (down from 347 in 2010).

The center noted that despite a decrease in syphilis cases last year, the general number of syphilis cases in Lithuania is the highest in the EU and is more then double the EU average.

2010 figures show that there were 4.4 syphilis cases per population of 100,000 in Lithuania.

There were two new cases of HIV, six cases of syphilis and 8 cases of gonorrhea among schoolchildren last year.
