Palanga Mayor says Soviet military cemetery in town center will not be removed by force

Mayor of Lithuania's western resort town of Palanga, Šarūnas Vaitkus, says that a Soviet military cemetery in the center of the town will not be removed by force. The comment was promted by an earlier remark by MEP Vytautas Landsbergis, who said that the place in front of the church in the town's center was not a proper place for the Soviet cemetery.

"We'll try to solve this issue. The more so we are obliged by local residents, who propose removing the cemetery to another site, to discuss this issue. But we will not do this by force as it was done in Tallinn five years ago when the Bronze Soldier monument was removed, but in a civilized way by looking for a compromise with the Russian embassy in Lithuania," Vaitkus told the Lietuvos Rytas daily.

In his words, "first of all, we have to explain to everyone that the removal of the cemetery from the town's center is just reburial of the remains of the Russian soldiers in the town's cemetery or some other proper, more remote place."
