Poland's president to visit Polish-dominated Šalčininkai before Lithuania's Independence Day festivities

Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski, scheduled to come to Lithuania on 16 February to take part in Independence Day festivities in Vilnius, will visit the town of Šalčininkai, where Polish people make the majority of the local population, ahead of official events.

"Coming to Lithuania at our president's (Dalia Grybauskaitė) invitation, the Polish president wished to visit Šalčininkai. It's a big event for us as it will be the first time the Polish president will visit our town," Šalčininkai Mayor Zdislav Palevic told BNS on Tuesday.

In his words, Komorowski will visit a local Polish school where a meeting with children, teachers and members of the local community are planned.

"The meeting with the gymnasium community – children, teachers and representatives of the Polish community – will take around an hour," the mayor said.

Palevic said later the Polish president would go to Jasiūnai where 19 century scientist and former Vilnius University Rector Sniadecky was buried.

Polish people make around 80 percent of Šalčininkai population.

Lithuanian and Polish presidents traditionally attend festive events in neighbouring countries when Lithuania marks the Day of Restoration of the State of Lithuania on 16 February and Poland marks its Independence Day on 11 November. Presidents also usually meet with representatives of ethnic minorities. During her visit to Poland last November, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with Lithuanians living in Punsk.

On 16 February, 1918 the Council of Lithuania led by Jonas Basanavicius proclaimed the restoration of the independent State of Lithuania, governed by democratic principles, with Vilnius as its capital.
