According to the State Border Security Service release, last Sunday, Lazdijai border patrol squad stopped a truck with Lithuanian license plates crossing the border from Poland. During a check, the officers found a secret compartment containing over 70 kilograms of hashish.
Several individuals – a Russian-Israeli national and Lithuanians from Vilnius and Marijampolė – were detained, charged with smuggling and possession of a very big amount of illegal substances.
Border security officers carried out searches and confiscated over 200,000 British pounds (830,000 litas) and 18,000 euros (some 62,000 litas).
The cargo was supposedly traveling from the Netherlands and crossing Lithuania on the way to Moscow in Russia.
2nd Vilnius court authorized the police to detain suspects in the drug smuggling case.
A pre-trial investigation is being carried-out by the State Border Security Service officers, headed by Vilnius district prosecutors.
This is the second successful operation by Lithuanian border patrol officers preventing large amounts of drugs from reaching black markets. In January, patrolmen in Telšiai and Kuršėnai detained around 100 litres of narcotic precursors, detaining 5 suspects in the process.
