Vilnius court opens case of vote-buying in prisons

A Vilnius court opened hearings into suspected buying of votes in prisons during the 2012 parliamentary elections.

Among the four defendants charged with impediment to exercise the voting right are the Labor Party's former candidate Viačeslav Zdanovič.

All of the defendants maintained they would only testify after interrogation of all witnesses, two of whom should testify later on Tuesday.

According to a pretrial investigation, all defendants operated in a group and agreed to buy votes of 3,000 individuals for the Labor Party in multi-mandate voting for 30,000 litas (EUR 8,700).
