Vilnius judge who released man wanted by Europol withdraws resignation

Gediminas Viederis, a judge of Vilnius City District Court who has recently released a Russian citizen wanted by Europol, has changed his mind and withdrawn his letter of resignation, Gintaras Kryzevičius, chairman of Lithuania's Judicial Council, has confirmed.

Last week, Viederis released Givi Gordeladze, detained in a Europol-coordinated operation in Vilnius, in the courtroom, and the man later went into hiding.

Following the ruling, prosecutors turned to Vilnius Regional Court which annulled Viederis' ruling and ordered Girdeladze arrested again.

A pan-European search for Gordeladze was subsequently re-launched. Attempts to find him in Lithuania have so far been unsuccessful.
