Energy experts skeptical about Lithuanian government rushing to adopt strategic decisions

Energy experts do not commend the government for its resolution to set forth Lithuania’s long-term energy priorities and press with the adoption of legislation governing those objectives, the Lietuvos Žinios daily reports.

“Our council has not considered the government’s position on those projects but, in my opinion, Lithuania should first adopt national energy strategy and then pass relevant laws. And now it seems as if we have a cart put in front of the horse,” Gintaras Adžgauskas, director at Lithuanian Member Committee of the World Energy Council, told the daily.

Adžgauskas believes that Lithuania’s energy strategy should be aligned with those of Latvia and Estonia. In his opinion, Lithuania’s key priority should be heating and not electricity since the country consumes up to 10 TWh of electricity and some 20 TWh of heating per year.

“I am an electricity expert but, in my opinion, electricity and, partially, gas terminal projects, which are considered strategic, undermine ... the issue, which is more important for the public – what to do in order to reduce heating bills,” Vladas Paškevičius, president of the Lithuanian Electricity Association, told the daily.

The government intends to approve three key bills on Wednesday, including a bill on the concession agreement for the construction of Visaginas nuclear power plant (VAE), a bill on a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal and a bill on synchronization of Lithuania’s electricity system with that of the European Union (EU).
