EP panel suggests reducing number of Lithuanian MEPs

The European Parliament's Constitutional Affairs Committee has proposed slashing the number of MEPs representing Lithuania – if the draft is approved, Lithuania will elect 11 instead of the current 12 parliamentarians in 2014.

The number of MEPs of some countries may be reduced in the light of Croatia's accession to the European Union. Croatia will have 11 seats in the EP.

EP representatives told BNS that amendments to the draft proposed earlier this month were expected by February 4. The committee will vote on the draft in February, followed by a discussion at the EP plenary in March. The proposal will still have to be discussed by the European Council, which facilitates meetings of officials of member-states.

According to the draft, Germany should lose three of its 99 mandates in the EP.
