Despite ongoing political and economic changes in the European Union, Lithuania should continue to strive to join the eurozone, the country's European commissioner, Algirdas Šemeta, has said.

"With the Lithuanian currency being pegged to the euro, we should strive to eventually become a full-fledged member of the currency union. The euro is like an extra reward for one's efforts," he said in an interview to the daily Kauno Diena.

Estonia adopted the euro at a very difficult time for the economy and achieved the best growth results. The country's economic growth remains among the strongest, Šemeta says.

"Therefore, Lithuania should also seek to achieve stable economic growth and maintain fiscal discipline. Euro adoption would be a sign that it has succeeded in doing so," he said.

The Lithuanian government has set 2014 as a target date for the country's eurozone entry.
