Former FCIS chief Vitalijus Gailius to run for parliament with Liberal Movement

Former chief of Lithuania's Financial Crimes Investigation Service Vitalijus Gailius, whose dismissal almost led to collapse of the government, intends to run for parliament together with the ruling Liberal Movement in the single-mandate Pakruojis-Rokiškis constituency, the party has said on Friday.

Gailius, whose dismissal from the post in February triggered a political crisis, was born in Joniškis and worked in Joniškis district police at the start of his career.

"I like the team of the Liberal Movement, the drive of the political force and its approach to state governance and legal matters. I believe I could translate my ideas into reality with the team," Gailius said in the press release.

Candidacies of Gailius and the party's other candidates for the upcoming elections will be approved by the Liberal Movement's council in Kaunas on Saturday.

Eligijus Masiulis, the party's leader, said that Gailius had done a lot for Lithuania and the state cannot lose a professional of his skill.

The general elections are scheduled for October.

Galius was dismissed from top position in the Financial Crimes Investigation Service by then Interior Minister Raimundas Palaitis on 15 February. Palaitis was forced to resign himself in the wake of criticism for the decision.
