German President: Lithuania’s plans to join euro demonstrate country’s confidence in Europe

Lithuania’s plans to adopt the euro demonstrate the country’s confidence in Europe, visiting Germany’s President Joachim Gauck has said.

“Despite certain difficulties in the euro zone, you intend to adopt the euro thus showing confidence in Europe and its future. We highly respect and appreciate this choice of yours,” a press release from the government quoted him as saying on Friday.

Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius and the German president on Friday discussed the situation in the euro zone. According to the press release, Germany praised and supported Lithuania’s aspirations to join the euro zone. Other topics of discussions included the Baltic Sea region strategy, Eastern Partnership and the European Union’s (EU) enlargement.

Gauck and Lithuania’s President Dalia Grybauskaitė also opened a bilateral Lithuania-Germany business forum on Friday.
