Kaunas mayor suggests restoring historic office of directly-ellected burgomasters

Andrius Kupčinskas, conservative mayor of Lithuania's second largest city Kaunas, has suggested that the post of burgomaster should be restored. He said burgomasters should be elected in direct elections and replace mayors.

In Kupčinskas' words, the burgomaster position that Lithuania had in the interwar period is "historically dear" to the population.

"The society would have more respect to the entire institution, if the possibility for direct burgomaster elections was introduced; of course, with relevant powers that then city and town burgomasters had in the interwar Lithuania when they directly performed their duties and summoned city councils to address truly strategic and concept matters, they directly headed municipal administrations," Kupčinskas said at a news conference at BNS Vilnius bureau on Wednesday.

He invited all parties to include provisions on direct elections of local government leaders into their programs for the upcoming general election.
