Lithuania calls on EU and Ukraine to ensure free trade area

Lithuania called on the EU heads of state to send a clear message about the aim to sign the Association Agreement with Ukraine and ensure a free trade area. Such a position was expressed by Lithuania's Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Vytautas Leškevičius at the meeting of ministers for European Affairs in Brussels on Monday.

"My call was about one specific aspect, about early application of one part of the agreement with Ukraine, namely the trade part, without waiting for ratification by parliaments of member states. It's a matter of political will," Leškevičius told BNS.

"Early application of that part would be beneficial and meaningful for both the EU in economic terms and Ukraine in both economic and non-economic terms," the diplomat said.

Ukraine hopes to sign the Association Agreement with the EU during the forthcoming EU Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius in November.
