“We have been briefed about the situation with the task groups. Some of them have already started doing their job. We have decided that these task groups will consider possible amendments to the national euro adoption plan,” Sadzius, who also heads a coordination task group for the adoption of the single currency, told the reporters on Monday.

The Cabinet would wait until Apr. 15 for the proposals on possible amendments, and the experts of the central Bank of Lithuania should work out a public awareness strategy, he added.

Sadzius said that he had no doubts about the benefits of the single currency.

“The examples of both Greece and Cyprus show that the euro zone is able to deal with such problems. The European Stability Fund is not a bag with gifts; it’s a certain fund which lends money and these loans bear certain interest; they are not provided free of charge,” the minister said.

A special task group, which would coordinate measures pertaining to Lithuania’s switchover to the euro, held its first meeting on Monday.

The Lithuanian government seeks to adopt the euro in 2015. Many economists approve of this target yet some of them warn that the country might actually fail to meet the requirements due to excessive inflation.
