Heads of both parliamentary committees expressed respect for Latvian citizens' constitutional rights to language, secured in the current Constitution, and highlighted the Latvian language's uniqueness and its importance for the preservation of national identity, the Lithuanian parliament's Public Relations Unit said.
The committees' chairmen signed the statement in response to the Latvian parliament's statement on the role of the Latvian language, stating that the Latvian language as a common language of all Latvian residents has an important role in ensuring democratic participation and a harmonious society of Latvia.
A referendum on giving the Russian language the status of the second state language in Latvia will be held on Saturday.
