The Supervision Committee of the Homeland Union–Lithuanian Christian Democrats, a ruling party, made the decision on Wednesday to expel two party members who were discovered to have been on the reserve list of the Soviet KGB.

"We held a meeting on two party members whose documents had been published by the website kgbveikla.lt and who were on the reserve list, and we made the decision to expel them. I would like to note that both of them accepted the decision realizing their ambiguous situation," the committee chairman Arvydas Anušauskas told BNS.

The two expelled party members are Romas Kalvaitis and Stasys Okunevičius who were both ranked as chief lieutenants in the KGB reserve. The latter was expelled despite the fact that he previously informed the party he was on the KGB reserve list. He also defended the parliament during the 13 January events in 1991 and was a defense volunteer.

"One of the expelled members defended the parliament and had other merits but such a decision was made as one must inform about a fact like belonging to the KGB reserve before joining the party and not 12 years later," Anušauskas said.
