The group wants lower requirements for organizing a referenda and also a ban on land sale to foreigners and legal entities.
The decision was backed by 8 commission members, three voted against and one abstained.
The group wants a referendum to be held in Lithuania in order to change a current law that requires the minimum of 300,000 signatures to call a referendum. The initiative calls for the requirement to be lowered to 100,000 signatures. The group also and also wants the ownership of land, internal waters, forests, and parks to be restricted to Lithuanian citizens or the state.
For such a referendum to be held, the group needs to collect at least 300,000 signatures in three months.
A group of Lithuanian MPs is also trying to initiate a referendum on banning land sale to foreigners. The initiative, however, has been criticized by the Seimas' lawyers who believe that the proposed constitutional amendments clearly run counter to the EU acquis and their adoption might be deemed a breach of international commitments.
