Lithuanian government postpones decisions on pay rise for cultural workers

The Government of Lithuania has decided to postpone decisions on a pay rise for cultural workers until the upcoming autumn. The government discussed conclusions of a working group on the issue on Monday.

Minister of Culture Šarūnas Birutis said that the break was needed for discussions on ways to implement the Constitutional Court's ruling on the reinstatement of pre-crisis wages.

"The issue is postponed for now, and, as you probably know, for the following reasons: following the Constitutional Court's ruling, which had been expected for a long time, that we need to reinstate all wages cut during the crisis for civil servants, and judges, and other officials, budget resources are very limited today," the minister told journalists.

In his words, funds for a rise in wages for cultural workers will be looked for during discussions on the next year's budget.

A working group, set up by Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius in June and led by Birutis, has already presented proposals on how wages for librarians, staff of cultural centers and museum workers should be raised.

The group suggests endorsing a program by December on measures to be taken over the next three years for cultural and art workers with the lowest wages to earn at least 1,732 litas (EUR 502) per month.
