Lithuanian Order and Justice party's euro referendum idea won't get support

Lithuania's Defense Minister Juozas Olekas, a Social Democrat substituting for the vacationing prime minister, stated on Tuesday that the ruling Order and Justice party's initiative to hold a referendum on accession to the eurozone will not get support at the government or the parliament.

„I believe the initiative will not rally support at the government or the Seimas,“ the minister told Ziniu Radijas radio.

Olekas dismissed as „rather odd“ the party's strife to initiate a parliamentary resolution on a mandatory referendum, saying the idea is the party's attempt to „find a niche for self-realization.“

“Preparation for introducing the common European currency, the euro, and achieving fully-fledged eurozone membership” is listed as an immediate priority in the Lithuanian government's program. The Cabinet has set the goal of joining the eurozone in 2015.
