In his words, the issue was addressed at a meeting of the ruling center-left four-party coalition.
"(Prime Minister) Algirdas Butkevičius explained that the entire tax package as a draft would be shortly submitted to coalition partners and we will not only discuss the small segment but the entire tax system as it is, the possible versions of changing the tax system, including pensions," Gedvilas said in an interview to Laisvoji Banga radio on Friday morning.
"Yes, we have to raise pensions in one way or another, as making a living on pensions people now receive is rather difficult. It is just a matter of time, I think we have to do everything in our capacity to increase pensions, as prices are not going down, as we see," the parliamentary speaker said.
After the outbreak of the financial crisis, the previous government of Andrius Kubilius in 2008 took austerity measures – cut salaries for employees in the state and public sector, lowered pensions, and raised some taxes.
The current prime minister Butkevičius said in the end of March that the new center-left government would start paying back debts of the economic downturn.
