Lithuanian parliament to have new logo

Lithuania's Seimas (Parliament) will have a new logo created by Arvydas Každailis, a heraldic artist and laureate of the National Culture and Arts Prize.

Three ideas were used for the Seimas' new logo, including an Odeon, the national flag and one of the forms of the stylized symbol of the state coat of arms, the Vytis, according to the Seimas Public Relations Unit.

"According to the author of the logo, an Odeon was used in Antiquity as a place of gathering of the Senate and also as an amphitheater. Since the Odeon's plan is similar to that of the Seimas sitting hall, the use of the symbol in the Seimas' logo symbolizes the sitting hall of the nation's representatives," the statement said.

The use of Vytis in its historical form symbolizes preserving the statehood as a national goal.

In democratic countries, parliament is elected by people and represents their interests; therefore, colors of the national flag in the Seimas' logo have a special meaning.

So far, the image of the first house of parliament was used as the Seimas logo.
