Lithuanian parliament wants public survey on dual citizenship

The Constitutional Commission of the Lithuanian parliament has proposed carrying out a survey to find out what the public thinks about legalizing dual citizenship. MPs are also to consult with constitutional law experts, global Lithuanian communities, and nongovernmental organizations.

On Wednesday, the Commission looked into a draft resolution on a referendum on the legalization of dual citizenship and decided to make an indefinite break during which it plans to hold discussions, organize a conference on the issue, and look for opportunities to carry out a public survey.

"We need to find the best way how to formulate the amendment of the Constitution for it to take into account everyone's interests," Rimantė Šalaševičiūtė, chairwoman of the Constitutional Commission, told journalists.

Under the existing laws, a Lithuanian citizen cannot have citizenship of another country. Since the provision is written into the Lithuanian Constitution, it can only be amended via a referendum.
