Lithuanian president refuses to reveal her vote in nuclear plant referendum

Lithuania's President Dalia Grybauskaitė will not reveal how she would want people to vote in October's referendum on the new nuclear power plant (NPP). However, she urges the government to “finally” provide the population with full information on the project.

"I would first want to encourage the government to finally provide explanations and full information to the people about the project, place it on all government websites from the government to the Foreign Ministry and the Energy Ministry, namely, answers to all unclear questions. Only after people have all the answers, they will be able to make decisions," Grybauskaitė told journalists on Wednesday.

During an extraordinary session on Monday, the parliament decided that the referendum on N-plant construction would be held in conjunction with the general elections on 14 October 2012.

Voters will vote ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to the following statement: “I support the construction of a new nuclear power plant in the Republic of Lithuania”.

The Seimas has already given its go-ahead for the construction of the new facility but the final investments decisions will be taken by the end of 2015.

Experts and project critics emphasize the lack of clarity on the price of the electricity generated by the new facility to end users.
