Lithuanian Prime Minister does not back euro referendum

Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius is skeptical about the idea of holding a referendum on euro adoption which was put forward by the Order and Justice party, a ruling coalition partner.

"When we were discussing the government's program, Order and Justice did not raise this issue. Probably everyone knows that at the time (of Lithuania's) accession to the EU, there was a comprehensive referendum, and the accession treaty also includes a commitment for Lithuania to introduce the euro. I remain very firm in my position on this," he told Žinių Radijas.

The Order and Justice party has proposed to hold a binding referendum on Lithuania's euro zone entry. The Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania, another coalition partner, says that the country should be the last EU member state to adopt the single currency.

Butkevičius' Social Democratic Party does not support the idea of a referendum on euro entry. Parliamentary Speaker Vydas Gedvilas of the Labor Party, another coalition partner, has also said that he does not back a referendum on this issue.

The government has set 2015 as the target year for joining the euro zone.
