"I believe law experts should have the final say. I see no major threats, and the last time I voted in favor of dual citizenship but, of course, certain requirements are needed before giving dual citizenship," the prime minister said in an interview to the Lithuanian Radio.
Butkevičius said that during his meetings with Lithuanian communities abroad, he heard wishes to have dual citizenship, but some of those people didn't even speak Lithuanian.
"You see during those meetings that people want to get Lithuanian citizenship but they don't speak Lithuanian anymore. There might be certain tests of those people at certain periods of times. More attention from our state is needed for that, for example, for children who were born abroad. There should be a complex of measures defining when dual citizenship can be granted and when not," the Lithuanian prime minister said.
A proposal to hold a referendum on dual citizenship alongside presidential elections in 2014 should be put before parliament later on Tuesday.
