Lithuanian Prime Minister pledges to implement OSCE commissioner's recommendations as long as they don’t run counter to Constitution

Lithuania plans to implement OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities Knut Vollebaek's recommendations in ways and to the extent that do not run counter to the country's Constitution, Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius told BNS following his meeting with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk In Warsaw on Wednesday afternoon.

"We agreed that both counties will carry out so-called Vollebaek's recommendations, and we have said that out loud and in public on numerous occasions that we will implement them in ways and to the extend which do not run counter to the Constitution. The second thing is that every state, every government has to, first of all, ensure that living and activity conditions for ethnic minorities are the best. And, third, we agreed that relations between governments of our countries should not become hostage to internal political matters," Kubilius said.

OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities Vollebaek has visited Lithuania and Poland several times, met with local officials as well as representatives of Lithuanian Poles and Polish Lithuanians and provided recommendations to both governments as to how existing problems should be solved. The recommendations are confidential.

Lithuanian-Polish relations have been tense recently amid disagreements over the situation of ethnic minorities.
