Lithuanian Seimas opens fall session with historic commemoration and no-confidence vote

During the first meeting, the lawmakers will mark the 20th anniversary since the visit of Pope John Paul II to Lithuania.

The first plenary should also feature a draft agenda of the tasks for the session, which is put together based on proposals from the government, parliamentary committees, political groups, and individual MPs.

The opposition intends to finish collecting signatures to call a no-confidence vote to remove Gapšys of the Labor Party.

Andrius Kubilius, the leader of the opposition Homeland Union–Lithuanian Christian Democrats (Conservatives), said the collected signatures should be submitted to Parliamentary Speaker Vydas Gedvilas.

Under the Seimas statute, a proposal to dismiss a Seimas official can be submitted by at least a fifth of Lithuania's 141 lawmakers, i.e., at least 29 parliamentarians. For the official to be removed, his dismissal must be supported by at least half, i.e., 71 parliamentarians in a secret ballot.

According to the schedule of meetings approved by the Seimas board, the parliament should hold 45 plenary meetings between September 10 and December 23.

The parliament holds two ordinary spring and fall sessions every year. Spring sessions start on March 10 and end on June 30, while fall sessions open on September 10 and close on December 23.
