Asked to specify his ballot in the referendum on the N-plant construction, Juršėnas said in an interview to Žinių Radijas news radio on Wednesday that he would vote against, saying this would probably be the party's official position.
"Social Democrats are not against nuclear energy in general but against this project – the administration has been refusing to give us many answers, the suspicion is that it does not know itself," he told the radio.
"The first question is how much it will cost. They're publishing one sum but a deeper analysis suggests the sum could be higher by a factor of 1.5 or at least a few billion litas. Where will the money come from? We now owe more than 50 billion litas (EUR 14.5 b), so we'll keep borrowing? What kind of a project is this?" the Social Democrat said.
On Monday, the parliament ruled that Lithuania will hold a referendum on the construction of the new nuclear power plant in conjunction with the general elections on 17 October.
The Seimas has already given the go-ahead for the construction of the new facility but the final investments decisions will be taken by the end of 2015.
