The statement was initiated by Bernard Guetta, an MEP from French President E. Macron’s party and it was also signed by Lithuanian MEPs Rasa Juknevičienė, Andrius Kubilius, Aušra Maldeikienė.
“Mr President, no court has sentenced A. Navalny to death. Thus, the Russian prisons administration and its superior institutions must ensure his life and physical inviolability. We are talking about compliance to the law and common humanity,” wrote the MEPs.
They noted that if A. Navalny were to die in prison or if his health is irreparably damaged, the responsibility for this will fall on Mr Putin’s shoulders, and his reputation as a president will be tarnished in the eyes of the international community.
“Currently, relations between the Russian Federation and the 27 countries we represent at the European Parliament are fairly tense, and we do not need yet another serious reason for worsening relations,” the MEPs noted.
