Most popular candidates for next Lithuanian prime minister - parliament speaker Irena Degutienė and MEP Viktor Uspaskich

Lithuanian residents believe that Irena Degutienė, Speaker of the Seimas from the Conservative Party, MEP Viktor Uspaskich, leader of the opposition Labor Party, would be most suitable candidates to head the government, a recent survey has shown.

According to the results of the survey by Spinter Tyrimai, public opinion and market research company, 17 percent of respondents would like to see Degutienė as the next prime minister, down from 17.6 percent in January.

The leader of the Labor Party came in second with 16.2 percent, his ratings jumping up by over 5 percent from January (10.6 percent).

Chairman of the Social Democratic Party Algirdas Butkevičius ranks third in the list of desirable prime ministers with 12.8 percent of votes, followed by the leader of the opposition Order and Justice Party and MEP Rolandas Paksas (4.6 percent).

Incumbent Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius remains fifth, with 4.5 percent of those surveyed supporting him.

The survey was carried out on 13-20 March.
