Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius proposed to President Dalia Grybauskaitė to appoint Melianas, representing the Liberal and Center Union, last Tuesday, and the president signed a decree appointing Melianas minister of interior affairs on 12 April after the candidate was checked pursuant to the Law on Corruption Prevention.

The position of minister of interior affairs became vacant following the resignation of liberal centrist Raimundas Palaitis, criticized by the conservatives for having sacked two top officials of the Financial Crime Investigation Service.

Melianas is one of 12 deputies of the leader of the Liberal and Center Union. He is also a member of the parliamentary Committee on Social and Labor Affairs.
