He also noted that the number of managing positions in prosecutor's offices across the country had dropped by a third and would decrease further.
"I view the results as fairly good, especially as they have been achieved over a period when the prosecution is undergoing the biggest changes over the post-independence period. Last year, the number of prosecutors was 5 percent lower than in 2010. The changes also cause certain psychological tensions for the staff, as there are changes to work organization and structure: the number of managing prosecutors has been reduced by a third and will be decreased further in the next phase of restructuring by the fall. All in all, the number of top-ranking prosecutors will be cut in half," Valys told journalists.
Under the new structure of the prosecution system, five regional prosecutor's offices have taken over functions of 56 territorial prosecutor's offices. They will feature specialized process divisions, and district prosecutor's offices are transformed into divisions of regional offices.
The new system will be enforced on May 4 this year.
