Over 111,000 people have cast early vote in Lithuanian general elections

Some 111,074 Lithuanian people, or 4.33 percent of all voters, have cast their votes over three days of early voting in the Lithuanian general elections and a referendum on the construction of a new nuclear power station, Zenonas Vaigauskas, chairman of the country's Central Electoral Commission, told BNS on Saturday.

Voter turnout this year is higher than during the last Seimas elections in 2008 when 83,465 people, or 3.11 percent of all voters, voted in three days of early voting.

Early voting is meant for people who will not be able to vote at their polling districts on Sunday. All in all, there were 49,790 such people during this election. People, who are in hospitals or care facilities, correctional facilities or are serving in the army, are voting by mail. On Friday, around 40,000 people voted by mail.

According to Vaigauskas, the electoral commission has received complaints from people who said they did not receive poll cards or that they received election campaign-related messages. But the number of such complaints is low.

The police said earlier in the week four pre-trial investigations into alleged voter bribery had been launched in Alytus, Jurbarkas and Šilutė. Ramunas Matonis, spokesman for the Police Department, told BNS on Saturday no more probes have been opened.
