Parliament approves Lithuania's progress strategy

The Seimas (Parliament) of Lithuanian on Tuesday approved the country's progress strategy Lietuva 2030 (Lithuania 2030), drafted by the government.

57 MPs voted in favor of the strategy, 3 were against and 28 abstained. MPs representing the Homeland Union–Lithuanian Christian Democrats and the Liberal Movement voted unanimously in favor, with the social democrats voting against and members of other political groups voting differently.

The strategy was drafted by the State Progress Council made up of experts of various areas - scientists, businesspeople, economic and political analysts - led by Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius. The strategy is aimed at setting guidelines for the state's further development. The strategy states that Lithuania should become a modern state open to the world, cherishing its national identity.

The document also names 10 indicators Lithuania has to achieve by 2020 and 2030. For example, Lithuania has to be in the top ten among EU member states based on the indices of Happiness, Competitiveness, Democracy, and Corruption Perception, and at least one Lithuanian university has to get into the top 300 of the best universities in the world by 2030. 60 percent of Lithuanian residents should also be proud of their identity.

Natural resources, rich historical experience, cultural heritage, professional and qualification opportunities, high standards of work culture, stable legal system, good IT and digital infrastructure are mentioned as Lithuania's strong sides. Meanwhile, the country's weaknesses include an identify crisis, the power of stereotypes, emigration, insular society, lack of tolerance, trust, care for each other and the surrounding environment, as well as lack of believe in the country's future.

The strategy underlines that approval by citizens, determination to change, mutual trust and respect, as well as initiativeness are needed for the strategy to be implemented.
