On Wednesday, she registered a draft resolution, suggesting to name 2018 the year of 100th anniversary of re-establishment of Lithuania's statehood.

Degutienė said that the focus should not be placed on celebrating the anniversary but spend the years before 2018 to pay special attention to educating the society in self-comprehension and civil responsibility, the parliament's Public Relations Division said.

According to the draft, the government, in cooperation with other state institutions and non-governmental organizations, should work out a special program 1 October and set up a steering group for implementation of the program.

On 16 February 1918, the Lithuanian Council proclaimed "the restoration of the independent state of Lithuania, founded on democratic principles, with Vilnius as its capital."
