“Such was the decision of these MPs. The final decision will be taken by the Economics Committee, and the key vote will be taken by the Plenary. We hope that the decision is favorable,” the commission’s chair Rokas Žilinskas told BNS after the panel’s meeting.

He said that he could not understand why the commission’s members voted against the nuclear power plant bill.

Energy Minister Arvydas Sekmokas told BNS that the panel’s decision was “rather unusual”.

Lithuania’s parliament (Seimas) has recently started debating a package of laws and other documents related to the country's key energy projects, including a draft concession agareement with Hitachi. If the Seimas endorses the documents by the end of June, the concession agreement with Japan's Hitachi on the Visaginas nuclear power plant – the country's largest-ever energy project at an estimated 16 billion to 18 billion litas (EUR 4.6-5.2 b) – is expected to be signed by 28 June at the latest.

Final investment decisions should be adopted over the next several years. The government expects Visaginas Nuclear Power Plant to be operational by 2020-2022.
