Polish national security chief in Vilnius: It's easy to cut off relations, but difficult to reinstate them

Head of Poland's National Security Bureau, Stanislaw Koziej, says countries should not have any gaps in their relations.

"We should not have any political obstacles and we should not have any gap and interruption in our relations because such interruption is something worst. It is easy to cut off, interrupt relations, but it is more difficult to reinstate dialog ant cooperation later," Koziej told journalists in Vilnius on Wednesday.

According to Koziej, Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski believes disagreements at the political level should not influence military cooperation, and stresses that re-emerging political disagreements between Lithuania and Poland do not influence security cooperation.

"Politicians of the top level should folow the example of the military men"," he said.

Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė has said recentlythet  Lithuanian-Polish working relations are very good, and political cooperation might wait amid disagreements over mutual concessions.

"Our relations, especially working relations, i.e., in the areas of economy, commerce, the implementation of common projects, are very good, and I would even say, more effective than before when top political relations were better," the president told the IQ magazine.

"I am very glad about that and I think that we have to cooperate in areas where we don’t have disagreements. Our interests within NATO, in the negotiations on the EU fiscal discipline match. I see no strategic, deep disagreements," the Lithuanian leader said.

According to Grybauskaitė, disagreements between Lithuania and Poland "are taking place on the level of ambitions of individual politicians."

"It's not for the benefit of both states, since by pushing around and arguing we look bad in the eyes of the international community. But improvement of our relations depends on mutual understanding and political will. If we cannot find political will at the top level, then real cooperation should be continued in the areas we can agree. And where we can't, we can wait a bit," the president said.

Lithuanian-Polish relations have been tense recently amid disagreements on ethnic minority issues.
