President and prime minister discuss Lithuania’s 2014 budget

Lithuania’s President Dalia Grybauskaitė and Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius on Tuesday discussed the country’s next year budget, which is being drafted now. They also spoke about the current presidency of the EU Council held by Lithuania.

“We spoke about the incoming fall session of the parliament (Seimas), we spoke about draft budget law as well as other legislative acts, which have been registered at the parliament and which have to be adopted by the Seimas as soon as possible. Of course, we also spoke about the presidency since there are many various events, international events, guests from other countries, as well as about other political, economic and social issues,” Butkevičius said in an interview to the Lithuanian Radio on Tuesday.

Last week he told BNS that next year's budget expenditures would increase by up to 1 billion litas (EUR 289.85m) due to fiscal discipline legislation and fiscal deficit should reach 1.8 percent of gross domestic product (GDP).

Next year’s budget is vitally important as Lithuania wants to adopt the euro in 2015. To qualify for entry, the country has to meet the so-called Maastricht criteria on budget deficit, inflation, and public debt.
