President: Lithuania cannot afford using just renewable energy

Lithuania should seek to have a mixture of energy sources, as power produced from renewable sources is too expensive for the country, President Dalia Grybauskaitė has said commenting on the outlook of the Visaginas nuclear power plant project.

"The majority of people voted against the project in the referendum. But Lithuania should seek a mixed energy provision. It would be too expensive to just use energy from renewable sources," she told Danish daily Politiken. The translation of the interview is published on the president's website.

The government of Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius plans to make up its mind whether to continue the nuclear plant project in spring.

Based on the previous government's plan, the three Baltic states and Japan's Hitachi would build a new 1,350-megawatt nuclear facility by 2020-2022. The people of Lithuania did not back the project in a referendum last October.
