Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius, leader of the ruling Social Democratic Party of Lithuania, says it is more important for him to carry out his prime ministerial duties well than run for president.

"I assumed the prime minister's duties not a long time ago. My duty is to show certain results as much as it is possible. I would like to say that the party will discuss this issue but I don't want to forestall the events. But I think that I would perform better here (in the Cabinet – BNS)," Butkevičius said in an interview with BNS, asked about the possibility of him running for president.

He told earlier that party leaders usually vied for the presidential position.

"I spoke about a certain tendency," he explained.

Butkevičius also refused to mention who else in his party might be a presidential candidate in the upcoming president election next May.
