Prime Minister envisages no extra funding for Lithuanian Ministry of Interior to raise police salaries

Lithuania's Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius says that the interior minister's pledge to raise officers' wages by 8-12 percent this year may only be implementing by redistributing existing funds.

"As far as I know, it is the minister's idea. He had a meeting with some statutory staff members. There is only one opportunity – to revise allocations on the program level, and the allocations are managed by the Interior Ministry. You are well aware of the Fiscal Discipline Law, which bars us from raising spending or allows raising the spending by a certain percentage," Butkevičius said on Monday.

Interior Minister Dailis Alfonsas Barakauskas said last week that raising the minimum monthly salary on January 1 should lead to more budget revenues, which should finance higher pay for officers.
